Musical Theatre & Drama
St. Al's has a long history of staging professional-level productions that have wowed audiences and showcased the exceptional talent of our students going all the way back to the 1960’s.
Over the years, we have delighted audiences with a wide variety of musical shows, each one offering something special.
A Stage for Personal Growth
Through participation in musical theatre and drama, students at St. Al's gain far more than just the ability to perform. The skills they develop on stage are highly transferable and applicable to all aspects of life. At the core, students enhance their communication abilities, learning how to express themselves clearly, confidently, and creatively in front of an audience. This builds public speaking skills, as well as self-confidence—tools that will benefit them both in the classroom and in future careers.
Collaboration and teamwork are key aspects of every production. Whether taking on a leading role, working backstage, or supporting the chorus, students learn how to work effectively as a group to achieve a shared goal. This cooperative atmosphere helps them understand the value of each role, fosters friendships, and nurtures a strong sense of community.
Furthermore, students involved in musical theatre and drama develop strong time management and organisational skills. Rehearsals, set design, costume preparation, and learning lines all demand dedication and commitment. These experiences teach students the importance of balancing schoolwork with their extracurricular pursuits, fostering discipline and resilience.
A Legacy of Outstanding Productions
Why Musical Theatre and Drama Matter
In recent years, our 2024 production of Grease transported the audience back to the vibrant 1950s, with high-energy dance numbers and timeless hits like "Summer Nights." Similarly, our previous year performance of All Shook Up! channelled the spirit of Elvis Presley, blending rock 'n' roll with the magic of theatre in a show that had everyone singing along.
Footloose, Sister Act and Mamma Mia were also recent smash hits, with students relishing the chance to showcase their comedy, dancing and vocal abilities in these crowd-pleasing productions. From Footloose’s rebellious spirit and powerful choreography to Mamma Mia’s uplifting ABBA classics, these shows left a lasting impression on both the performers and the audience.
In contrast, the school’s productions of Annie and Oliver took audiences on emotional journeys, capturing the heartwarming stories of resilience and hope. The casts in these productions displayed incredible acting and singing talent, drawing both laughter and tears from those in attendance.
Musical theatre and drama are more than just performances; they are opportunities for students to discover their passions, build lasting friendships, and develop skills that will carry them far beyond the stage. Whether students are destined for a future in the performing arts or simply looking to build their confidence, the experiences gained in these productions will stay with them for a lifetime.
At St. Al's, we are incredibly proud of the thriving drama and musical theatre tradition we’ve built, and we look forward to many more outstanding performances in the future with our 2025 musical production of West Side Story in the pipeline.
